CHAPTER 15

I had barely made it through the part of my tale to Keir where Thomas and Carver had shown up when Zev and Marigold strolled into the room.

“I can’t believe you had a party and started without me,” Marigold said as she handed me the grimoire. “Here’s your book. All safe and sound. See, my method is tried and true. No one ever checks under the towel in the backseat.”

“Hardy har,” I replied. The grimoire warmed as I ran my hand over the cover. “Thank you for bringing it from home. I should’ve known better than to think I could have a nice vacation away from it for a week.”

Zev gave me a bland look. “Was this supposed to be a vacation?”

“It was the first time I’ve spent a night away from Southill in over four years, so yes,” I told him.

“On top of that, it’s pretty damn swanky,” Marigold added. “If it wasn’t for the threat of death, this would be a five-star experience.”

“Yeah, the death part really puts a crimp on the whole relaxing week away from home.”

I sat down on the bed as the room felt suddenly small with five extra people in it. The hag stone charm on the bracelet clicked against the other stones.

“Ooo,” Marigold crooned. “Lemme see it.”

I held out my wrist, and my sister came over and examined the piece of jewelry. She ran her fingers over the peridot ring and teared up.

Nope, I thought. None of that. I was just barely holding it together. I took my wrist back from her.

She glanced over her shoulder at Carver. “It’s such beautiful workmanship,” she told him. “You are a real artist.”

Carver gave her a pleased smile. “Thank you.”

“How can we test to see if it’s working?” Keir asked.

I noticed he and Zev hadn’t even looked at each other since the ifrit entered the room. It made me think that the conversation he’d had with Zev had been even more contentious than I’d imagined. I wanted to talk to Keir about it, but the conversation could wait. We had bigger fish to fry, and that was neither a nero nor an ignis joke.

“I’d really like to know as well.” I nodded to Carver. “No offense. I’m sure you’re very good at what you do.”

“None taken. I wouldn’t buy a car without kicking the tires first.”

“Kicking the tires tells you nothing about a car,” Zev said brusquely. At first, I thought it was still about Keir, but then I noticed the way he was noticing the way Carver and Marigold were looking at each other.

Carver gave the ifrit a conciliatory nod. “I’m not opposed to a test drive.”

I hoped he was talking about the bracelet and not my sister.

Absently, I traced the symbols on the grimoire. “It’s not like I can go around shaking everyone’s hand until the stones start to vibrate.”

“I’m with Iris on this,” Keir agreed. “Besides, I don’t want to give Bogmall an inkling that we suspect she’s behind the earlier attack. She’s smart, and if she thinks we’re on to her, she’ll pivot.
